Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has a long history as an herb that cares for the skin. Its petals are rich in flavonoids, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Calendula-infused oils or salves are an excellent choice for treating dry and cracked skin, as they provide deep hydration and support the skin’s natural healing processes. Whether used as a spot treatment or an all-over moisturizer, calendula’s gentle touch can work wonders on winter-damaged skin.
Soothing Calendula Balm
Apply this balm to dry or irritated skin as needed for a nourishing and calming effect.
You’ll need:
- ½ cup dried calendula petals
- 1 cup (250 ml) carrier oil (such as olive or coconut oil)
- 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
- 10–15 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
- A glass jar or tin for storage
Instructions:
Begin by infusing the dried calendula petals in the carrier oil. Combine the petals and oil in a jar and let the mixture sit in a sunny spot for about two weeks, shaking it gently each day. After the infusion period, strain the oil to remove the petals. In a double boiler, melt the beeswax pellets. Once melted, add the calendula-infused oil and stir well. If desired, add 10–15 drops of lavender essential oil for a stronger fragrance and additional healing benefits. Pour the mixture into a glass jar or tin and allow it to cool and solidify. Seal the container and store the balm in a cool, dry place.
