Below are a few tips on how to use horseradish during cold and flu season. You can use it not only when you’re sick, but also as a preventive remedy.
Horseradish honey
Peel fresh horseradish and grate it finely. Mix with honey. Take this mixture three times a day when you have a cold, or take one spoonful daily as prevention.
Add it to meals
Add a tablespoon of grated horseradish to cabbage, beets, or apple salad.
HORSERADISH INHALATION
Relieve a stuffy nose with a horseradish steam inhalation. Grate a piece of horseradish into a suitable bowl and pour over hot water. Lean over the rising steam, cover your head with a towel, and stay like this for at least 5–10 minutes.
HORSERADISH COMPRESS
You can also clear your nose with a horseradish compress. Finely grate a small piece of root (a few centimeters long), wrap it in a handkerchief, and tie it into a little bundle. Place the bundle on the back of your neck at the seventh vertebra. You’ll feel a mild burning sensation caused by mustard oils in the root. To avoid irritating your skin, don’t leave the compress on for longer than 5 minutes, and afterward apply some cream to the area. Use once or twice daily.
